THE FOLLOWING ECONOMIC ANALYSIS IS BASED ON A WINDHUNTER VESSEL WITH FOUR WIND TURBINES
The first Windhunter that might be built with existing ship design formulae could be a mono hull with deck wing extensions or a trimaran. Four two-megawatt wind turbines would be mounted on a movable framework connected to the deck. The electrical power from the turbines is sent to four electrolyzers in the hulls or inside the deck. The collected hydrogen is compressed and stored in tube tank trailers until they are shuttled to shore.
In order to launch the first Windhunter vessel we have divided the project into three phases which are: (1) Feasibility study of the vessel and wind turbines, (2) Design, build and launch of the vessel and (3) Hydrogen production from that vessel. A naval architect firm estimated that phases 1 & 2 will take 70 months.
The estimated total cost of $100 million is based on 2006 prices. There is always a possibility or likelihood that additional expenses and or equipment will be necessary.
The three phases of the Windhunter project are defined below:
(1) FEASABILITY STUDY PHASE
An invitation to respond will be sent to many of the worlds' ship builders and wind turbine manufacturers. These firms will be asked to pair themselves. A pair will consist of one ship builder and one wind turbine manufacturer. Two pairs will be selected to study the feasibility of the Windhunter concept. They will then be funded to complete their initial feasibility study in three months. A naval architect firm estimated that 3 months is enough time to do the preliminary work.
(2) TESTING, DESIGN AND BUILD PHASE
One pair will be selected to continue the testing, design and build phase leading to launch of the first Windhunter vessel. This pair will also follow up during the first year of hydrogen production.
(3) HYDROGEN PRODUCTION
There are two files that can be downloaded from this web site page. One is a spreadsheet that analyzes the operating Windhunter vessel from an economic perspective. The other is a document that describes the assumptions utilized in the spreadsheet and methods of conducting "what if" scenarios.
ARE YOU INTERESTED?
If you are interested in the Windhunter project and are a ship builder or wind turbine manufacturer please reply on the contact page of this site. A detailed business plan can then be supplied in the near future. With your permission we will share lists of interested ship builders and wind turbine manufacturers so that you may select your partner.
